Water Works is a maintenance and repair program
operated by Lifewater International that helps communities and schools with
their operation and maintenance (O&M) work. The Water Works Technician is
responsible for ensuring that the highest quality maintenance and repair work
is performed on all water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) hardware in the
communities and schools that are part of the Water Works program.

Job summary: The Water Works Technician
will be an all-round technician who is familiar with maintenance and repair for
hand pumps, motorized pumping systems, rain tanks, latrine blocks, and
handwashing stations. In addition to maintenance and repair works, the Water
Work Mechanic is also responsible for testing water quality, promoting a
contamination-free, clean environment around WASH hardware, and supervising
outside contractors when necessary.

Please note
that this is a highly accountable position in which all activities are logged
into an online data system for review and quality assurance.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

Maintenance and Repair of WASH
hardware (40% in 2020, increasing to 80% over time as maintenance and repair
needs increase)

Monitor, assess, and perform preventative
maintenance and repair work on water, sanitation, and hygiene hardware
constructed by Lifewater.

·      
Monitor latrine block filling rates in schools
and work with Procurement Officer to contract latrine drainage provider when
needed.

·      
Interact with community and school
representatives during maintenance and repair visits, understand their
concerns, and respond accordingly.

·      
Ensure harmony between the technical aspects of
the hardware you are maintaining and the ‘software’ aspects within the
communities and schools you are working in.

·      
Promote holistic water, sanitation, and hygiene
practices in communities and schools.

·      
Technical Support for Lifewater Activities (40%
in 2020, decreasing to 0% over time as maintenance and repair needs increase)

·      
Support WASH Technicians and Junior WASH
Technicians with their activities.

·      
Help with other Lifewater activities as needed.

Water Works Planning, Reporting,
and Community Liaison (10%)

·      
At the beginning of each year, work with the
Program Coordinator to plan the maintenance and water quality testing schedule
for the coming year.

·      
Notify communities and schools of their planned
visit dates. Collect and submit monitoring data on a daily basis using the AKVO
online monitoring system.

·      
Manage the Water Works mobile phone and respond
to calls with a high level of customer service.

·      
Ensure repair calls are answered and water
points are repaired within three days of receiving the initial call.

·      
Help the Cashier plan for monthly parish level
meetings and follow up with communities and schools if there is a problem with
their payment or they miss a payment.

·      
Prepare and submit a 15/5 weekly activity
report, timesheet, and a weekly brief to the Sustainability Officer and the
Program Coordinator.

Technical Supervision and Record
Keeping (5%)

·      
Support the WASH Technicians & Junior WASH
Technicians in monitoring construction defects on water points and
institutional latrines during retention period and assist in supervising
repairs of the defects by contractors

·      
Oversee and supervise school latrine block
drainage.

·      
Record parts usage in logbook and submit logbook
to the Cashier at the end of each day for inventory reconciliation.

·      
Perform monthly stock checks with the Cashier.

·      
Work with the Procurement Officer and Sustainability
Officer to order new parts when needed.

Other (5%)

·      
Participate in regular staff/Skype meetings and
morning devotion.

·      
Prepare additional reports and take part in
additional meetings when needed.

·      
Ensure all the maintenance, repair, and water
quality materials procured for Water Works are used efficiently.

·      
Ensure the maintenance and proper care of all
the tools and equipment used in the Water Works program.

·      
Carry out other assignments as may be required
by the Program Coordinator or Sustainability Officer.

·      
Work closely with district and sub-county
stakeholders and Lifewater staff when needed.

Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:

·      
At least 3 years’ experience in maintaining and
repairing rural WASH hardware (including hand pumps, piped water systems, and
latrine blocks).

·      
The ideal applicant must hold at least  a diploma in Water/Civil Engineering,
certificate in plumbing is an added advantage. Additional training in water
quality testing and supervision of contractors is a plus.

·      
Experience working with District Water Office
hand pump mechanic associations.

·      
Able to work well in a team to produce
high-quality results in a multi-cultural setting.

·      
Demonstrated ability to establish strong
relationships.

·      
Competence in tracking and recording inventory
with a high level of detail.

·      
Analytical skills and decision-making abilities
even in complex and sensitive situations.

·      
Computer skills, and especially with Microsoft
Office applications.

·      
Ability to operate a motorcycle and larger
vehicle with a clean driver’s license (Class A,B, DL/DM).

·      
Must be a committed Christian, able to cope with
cross-cultural and denominational diversities.

·      
Committed to regular Christian fellowship with
other Christians.

·      
Emotionally and spiritually mature team player.

·      
Understanding and sensitivity to cross-cultural
